Le Crépuscule des Dieux scandinaves, l'Atlantide de Platon, les combats de la Théogonie grecque, la Geste de Troie, le règlement de comptes à Ithaque, la Révolution qui a aboli la royauté à Rome, la guerre lavinienne dans l'Enéide, l'histoire mythique des "Conquêtes de l'Irlande", l'immense combat d'Aliscans, la grande épopée indienne du Mahabharata : tous ces récits, part importante du patimoine culturel de l'Europe et de l'Asie méridionale, relèvent de genres et de champs d'étude bien différents. Nous pensons pourtant pouvoir établir qu'ils dérivent d'un commun héritage indo-européen, d'une "matrice mythique" décrivant la "fin d'un âge", ou la "fin des temps", sous forme d'une bataille cataclysmique opposant des camps apparentés ; "bataille finale" dont les camps sont définis en relation avec quatre "fonctions" indo-européennes.

Quelles sont les relations entre les deux genres complexes, variés et changeants que constituent les romans grecs anciens et la poésie, épique, lyrique, dramatique, d'époque archaïque, classique, hellénistique? Ce recueil de dix-sept articles, issus d'un colloque tenu à Nice en 2013, ouvre à nouveaux frais ce dossier. Au-delà des influences et intertextualités, quatre domaines sont étudiés : lien entre images et figures poétiques et romanesques ; jeux de références, lectures, réécritures effets de rythme et jeux de structure ; roman comme poésie et poésie comme roman. Chaque aspect fait l'objet d'approches à la fois théoriques et appliquées, présentant un état des lieux critique et proposant des perspectives renouvelées, voire des interrogations originales. Sont ainsi abordés l'évolution de la prononciation du grec à l'époque impériale, le rapport description/ narration et l'ekphrasis, la métaphore et la fiction, la relation des romanciers anciens à la tradition rhétorique voire scolaire, le roman épique ou tragique et la poésie romanesque, ou encore les liens avec la littérature latine. Enfin, ce sont les relations entre théorie littéraire contemporaine et réflexivité ancienne, ainsi qu'entre littérature générale et philologie classique, qui sont ici réinterrogées.

What are the relations between the two complex, varied, and changing genres of ancient Greek novel and epic, lyric, dramatic poetry, from archaic, classical, or Hellenistic periods? That is the issue this collection of seventeen articles aimed to reopen, coming from a conference held in Nice in 2013. Beyond influences and intertextualities, four main topics have been addressed: relations between novelistic and poetic images and figures; interplays of references, readings, and rewritings, rhythmical and structural effects; novel as a poetry and poetry as a novel. Each aspect has been approached both theoretically and practically, with critical overviews and renewed perspectives, or even innovative questionings, about the evolution of Greek pronunciation in imperial times, the relation between description/narration and ekphrasis, metaphor and fiction, ancient novelist and rhetorical, or even educational, traditions, epic or tragic novels and "novelistic poetry", or even their connection to Latin literature. Thus, one crucial issue here is the relation between contemporary literary theory and ancient reflexivity, as well as between general literature and classical philology.

Achille, Énée, Ulysse continuent à nous parler les bandes dessinées, les films, les séries télévisées l'attestent. Pourquoi les mythes résistent-ils au temps qui passe, comme une nappe profonde qui J continue d'irriguer notre imaginaire, par-delà les strates des périodes historiques ? Tout récemment, les avancées des neurosciences ont permis de constater que voir et imaginer activent les mêmes zones de notre cerveau. À travers ses récits, le mythe peut alors se définir comme une mise en miroir des dynamismes organisateurs de l'imaginaire humain: quand nous imaginons les héros grecs et romains, c'est nous-mêmes qui nous mettons enjeu. Ce livre suit cette genèse et cette élaboration à travers les figures et les aventures héroïques, avant d'élargir notre propos vers l'esquisse d'une grammaire universelle des mythes.

The poems of the Epic Cycle are assumed to be the reworking of myths and narratives which had their roots in an oral tradition predating that of many of the myths and narratives which took their present form in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The remains of these texts allow us to investigate diachronic aspects of epic diction as well as the extent of variation within it on the part of individual authors - two of the most important questions in modern research on archaic epic. They also help to illuminate the early history of Greek mythology. Access to the poems, however, has been thwarted by their current fragmentary state. This volume provides the scholarly community and graduate students with a thorough critical foundation for reading and interpreting them.

In ancient Greece epiphanies were embedded in cultural production and employed by socio-political elite in both perpetuating pre-existing power structures and constructing new ones. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of the history of divine epiphany as presented in the literary and epigraphic narratives of the Greeks-speaking world. It demonstrates that divine epiphanies not only reveal what the Greeks thought about their gods; they tell us just as much about the preoccupations, the preconceptions, and the assumptions of ancient Greek religion and culture. In doing so, it explores the deities who were prone to epiphany and the contexts in which they manifested themselves, as well as the functions (narratives and situational) they served, addressing the cultural specificity of divine morphology and mortal-immortal interaction. Divine Epiphany in Greek Literature and Culture re-establishes epiphany as a crucial mode in Greek religious thought and practice, underlines its centrality in Greek cultural production, and foregrounds its impact on both the political and the societal organization of the ancient Greeks.

The symposion is arguably the most significant and well-documented context for the performance, transmission, and criticism of archaic and classical Greek poetry, a distinction attested by its continued hold on the poetic imagination even after its demise as a performance setting. The Cup of Song explores the symbiotic relationship of poetry and the symposion throughout Greek literary history, considering the latter both as a literal performance context and as an imaginary space pregnant with social, political, and aesthetic implications.

This collection of essays by an international group of leading scholars illuminates the various facets of this relationship, from Greek literature's earliest beginnings through to its afterlife in Roman poetry, ranging from the Near Eastern origins of the Greek symposion in the eighth century to Horace's evocations of his archaic models and Lucian's knowing reworking of classic texts. Each chapter discusses one aspect of sympotic engagement by key authors across the major genres of Greek poetry, including archaic and classical lyric, tragedy and comedy, and Hellenistic epigram; discussions of literary sources are complemented by analysis of the visual evidence of painted pottery. Consideration of these diverse modes and genres from the unifying perspective of their relation to the symposion leads to a characterization of the full spectrum of sympotic poetry that retains an eye to both its shared common features and the specificity of individual genres and texts.

What kind of allusion is possible in a poetry derived from a centuries-long oral tradition, and what kind of oral-derived poetry are the Homeric epics? Comparison of Homeric epic with South Slavic heroic song has suggested certain types of answers to these questions, yet the South Slavic paradigm is neither straightforward in itself nor necessarily the only pertinent paradigm: Augustan Latin poetry uses many sophisticated and highly self-conscious techniques of allusion which can, this book contends, be suggestively paralleled in Homeric epic, and some of the same techniques of allusion can be found in Near Eastern poetry of the third and second millennia BC.

By attending to these various paradigms, this challenging study argues for a new understanding of Homeric allusion and its place in literary history, broaching the question of whether there can have been historical continuity in a poetics of allusion stretching from the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh, via the Iliad and Odyssey, to the Aeneid and Metamorphoses, despite the enormous disparities of time and place and of language and culture, including those represented by the cuneiform tablet, the papyrus roll, and an oral performance culture. The fundamental methodological problems are explored through a series of interlocking case studies, treating of how the Odyssey conceivably alludes to the Iliad and also to earlier poetry on Odysseus' homecoming, the Iliad to earlier poetry on the Ethiopian hero Memnon, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter to earlier poetry on Hades' abduction of Persephone and early Greek epic to Mesopotamian mythological poetry, pre-eminently the Babylonian epic of Gilgamesh.

Les soubresauts européens actuels montrent à quel point les notions les plus ancrées peuvent dériver, diviser. The sixth-century BC Greek poet Stesichorus was highly esteemed in antiquity; but by about AD 400 his works had been almost completely lost. Over recent decades, the recovery of substantial portions of his poetry has enabled a reassessment of his significance. These essays by leading scholars analyse different aspects of his oeuvre: the relationship between Stesichorus and epic, particularly his response to the Homeric poems; his narrative technique and handling of erotic themes; and his influence and reception in fifth-century Athens, in Hellenistic scholarship and poetry, in the Renaissance, andin poetry today. The volume as a whole - the first such collection dedicated to this author - amply demonstrates the extraordinary creativity and continuing vitality of the poet from Himera.

Current understandings of the sublime are focused by a single word ("sublimity") and by a single author ("Longinus"). The sublime is not a word: it is a concept and an experience, or rather a whole range of ideas, meanings, and experiences that are embedded in conceptual and experiential patterns. Once we train our sights on these patterns a radically different prospect on the sublime in antiquity comes to light, one that touches everything from its range of expressions to its dates of emergence, evolution, role in the cultures of antiquity as a whole, and later reception. This book is the first to outline a comprehensive account of the sublime in Greek and Roman poetry, philosophy, and the sciences, in addition to rhetoric and literary criticism. It offers new readings of Longinus with an eye to situating him in a much larger context of reflection on the sublime in antiquity.

This book seeks to restore Homer to his rightful place among the principal figures in the history of political and moral philosophy. Through this fresh and provocative analysis of the Iliad and the Odyssey, Peter J. Ahrensdorf examines Homer's understanding of the best life, the nature of the divine, and the nature of human excellence. According to Ahrensdorf, Homer teaches that human greatness eclipses that of the gods; that the contemplative and compassionate singer ultimately surpasses the heroic warrior in grandeur; and that it is the courageously questioning Achilles, not the loyal Hector or even the wily Odysseus, who comes closest to the humane wisdom of Homer himself. Thanks to Homer, two of the distinctive features of Greek civilization are its extraordinary celebration of human excellence, as can be seen in Greek athletics, sculpture, and nudity, and its singular questioning of the divine, as can be seen in Greek philosophy.
